I had recently gotten a Playstation Vita for Christmas and decided I could get the full experience if I actually bought a game. Short on cash at the time, I purchased this game from Amazon for $17. I heard it's the best Vita experience, but I guess you're reading this to see if I really think so.
"Gravity Rush" is, for starters, a very unique and interesting game. The main mechanic of the game is to allow you to shift gravity however you want. For instance, if you want to make your gravity up instead of down, simply tap R which makes you float in zero gravity, aim up with the right analog stick or tilting your Vita up, press R again, and then you're falling up! You can walk on walls, ceilings, or even "fall" to your destination. You can use your gravity powers to solve puzzles and battle in combat.
As for the story of "Gravity Rush", it feels more of a pilot for a TV series than rather a stand-alone game. Then again, judging by the announcement of a sequel a few months ago, maybe the developers were planning on it. You play as Kat, a young girl who fell out of the sky and has no memory of who she is or how she got to where she was. She is soon pulled into an adventure against the monsters known as Nevi, and a starry cat that's been following her gives her the ability to shift gravity. And that's just the overall plot. The reason I said it feels more like a TV pilot was because the game seemed to introduce a mystery, but then went towards another plot instead, then ending with a cliffhanger with only a few questions answered. Hopefully the second game will provide a bit more story because the story in this game (21 levels) felt really short.
As far as graphics go, I was really surprised how amazing the game looked on a portable device. I want to think it's PS3 graphics, but perhaps it's more like a PS2 and on a small screen. The art style fascinated me. It kind of looks like a cel-shaded, CGI anime. So, if you don't like anime (Japanese cartoons) for it's art style, this game isn't for you.
The weakest point of the game, for certain, is the combat. It's not as bad as other reviews I've read has said (I've had to come up with strategies rather quickly), but it's still bad. There is no targeting system, so when you have to use your gravity attack on a Nevi, the Nevi could dodge or turn around, making you miss and having to turn around and try again with a 50% chance of missing again. I'm not asking the developers to make the AI easier, but to have the attacks target the enemies a bit better.
Overall, though, this was an amazing gaming experience. The unique gameplay was better than I had anticipated and it truly does make use of the Vita's touchscreen and tilt features (they are optional. You are not forced to move your Vita around constantly). If you have a Vita and have not played this game, I'd greatly recommend it. I mean, come on, it's less than $20 on Amazon.
4/5 Stars
What's going to be my next Vita game though? I'm think of the "Walking Dead" by Telltale, but by the time I actually buy it, "Final Fantasy X|X-2" will be out! *Sigh* Decisions, decisions...
